Cleveland candidates to discuss lesbian-gay issues

Cleveland-Stonewall Cleveland, the Log Cabin Republicans, and The Gay '90s radio program will be hosting a candidates night for those individuals from Northeast Ohio that are running for U.S. House of Representatives, Ohio House and Senate, and Cuyahoga County Commissioner.

The event, scheduled for Sunday, October 13, at 7:00 pm, will give the community an opportunity to ask questions of the candidates regarding their positions on issues affecting the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

Buck Harris, host of The Gay '90s, will serve as the moderator of the event, which will be simulcast on his radio program. The candidates night will be held at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2592 West 14th Street, in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood. To reserve a slot, call Bill Henderson at 216-6219530 or Rich Oldrieve at 216-892-1994.

Lesbian portrait show opens

Columbus "Reflecting an Honest Image: Portraits of Lesbians and Bisexual Women" is an exhibition of photographs by M. Alyssa Jones on display through October 5 in the Exposures Gallery in the Ohio Union at Ohio State University. The photographs exhibited are from a work in progress by Jones. It is a collection of portraits intending to reflect an honest image of lesbian identity. "The variety of images is very exciting," according to Willa Young, women student services director at OSU. "The diversity presented in the portraits reflects a wholeness of who lesbian and bi women are in Central Ohio."

Working against current images that have been limiting, Jones says the images she presents are "the reality of who is around me

in 1996." Her portraits build upon the groundbreaking photographs of lesbians from

the 1970s and the 1980s, but they relate to women in the present.

Jones' work also challenges what we learn of lesbian women from advertising in what she calls "its version of homoeroticised project pushing." She continues, "Vacant waifs touching each other are nothing that my experience can relate to, but it's how we are now granted existence as a marketing demographic. These portraits are my gift and my attempt to provide a more honest reflection."

A public reception with the artist is scheduled for Saturday, September 28 from 7 to 10 pm. The Exposures Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 11 pm and Sundays from noon to 9 pm.

Speak to the women of 2096

Cleveland-Among the most interesting events during this year's Cleveland Bicentennial celebration was the opening of a time capsule which had been sealed by the women of 1896, on the occasion of the city's 100th birthday. The time capsule was a way for women in 1996 to see what life in Cleveland was like 100 years ago for their foremothers and sisters.

The group "Women Celebrating the Bicentennial" is inviting women's groups to submit items for inclusion in a time capsule that will serve as a gift from today's women to the women of 2096.

Our sisters then were still fighting for the right to vote. Society has definitely come a long way since 1896 in recognizing the equal rights of women, including lesbian and bisexual women.

No time capsule would be complete without submissions from various groups in Cleveland that reflect the diversity of the women's community.

Submissions can be anything from a group of lesbian mothers and their children, an all-dyke softball team, or a group of five friends. The group will then submit

personalized message, and as many items that reflect the group's purpose as will fit in an 11 by 14 inch clasp envelope. Items included might be a single object that symbolizes the group's shared interests, concerns, and future dreams; photos, drawings, and a statement that describes the

group members' daily lives; or historical documents that tell of the group's mission and accomplishments.

Keep in mind that symbols and references that are obvious in 1996 may be incomprehensible in 2096, so be sure to include a detailed explanation of the items included. The capsule will be sealed on December 18 at a special ceremony at the Western Reserve Historical Society. It will not be opened for 100 years. Items not chosen for inclusion in the capsule will be held by Women Celebrating the Bicentennial, whose capsule committee is investigating the feasability of creating a permanent Women's Archive. Deadline for submissions is October 15. Call Jean Gaede at 216-561-6237 or Genevieve Ray at 216371-3323 for more details.

TV show to focus on elections

Columbus-The Lesbian, Gay, Bi Report, the only Central Ohio-produced TV show focusing on gay, lesbian and bisexual issues, has announced a joint effort with Ohioans Against Discrimination, a statewide political action committee, in producing a series of TV shows focusing on November's election. The series will be shown in October on Saturday and Monday nights at 11:30 p.m. on Community Channel 21.

The first show will focus on Jeffrey Ayers, the first openly gay person to run for Franklin County Common Pleas Court judge. The second episode will feature the Log Cabin Club and its president, Doug Assenbach. Assenbach will discuss with host Mike Dittmer the Log Cabin's goals of educating the gay and lesbian community about Republican candidates who are supportive of the needs of the gay community.
